the 50 States project 

was conceived by 

 

travis craig (poetry) 

& 

jeffrey mcmahon (photography)

 

the 50 short poems were paired 

with 50 photos taken during 

both artists’ residency

 at the aca in new smyrna beach, fl 2019

 

an algorithm paired 

the words with the images 

and as jeffery guided the fonts

the images became  

a sometimes stark contrast to the words

 

sometimes they crash

sometimes they meet in perfect harmony 

or do they always meet in perfect harmony

or do they actually never conjunct at all

what we hope to have is a metaphor 

for the 50 states of this great nation

for the infinite states of being

for the states of happiness and laughter and honesty and honor

for all states of loneliness and discomfort and disfigurement and horror

for all the states of heart and mind and spirit and all in-between
